Search for gamma-ray bursts with the ANTARES neutrino telescope
نویسنده
چکیده
Satellites that are capable of detecting gamma-ray bursts can trigger the ANTARES neutrino telescope via the real-time gamma-ray bursts coordinates network. Thanks to the “all-data-toshore” concept that is implemented in the data acquisition system of ANTARES, the sensitivity to neutrinos from gamma-ray bursts is significantly increased when a gamma-ray burst is detected by these satellites. The performance of the satellite-triggered data taking is shown, as well as the resulting gain in detection efficiency. Different search methods can be applied to the data taken in coincidence with gamma-ray bursts. For gamma-ray bursts above the ANTARES horizon, for which a neutrino signal is more difficult to find, an analysis method is applied to detect muons induced by the high-energy gamma rays from the source.

Recent results from the ANTARES neutrino telescope
The ANTARES neutrino telescope is currently the largest operating water Cherenkov detector and the largest neutrino detector in the Northern Hemisphere. Its main scientific target is the detection of high-energy (TeV and beyond) neutrinos from cosmic accelerators, as predicted by hadronic interaction models, and the measurement of the diffuse neutrino flux. Its location allows for surveying a l...
متن کاملSearch for muon neutrinos from gamma-ray bursts with the ANTARES neutrino telescope using 2008 to 2011 data⋆⋆⋆
Aims. We search for muon neutrinos in coincidence with GRBs with the ANTARES neutrino detector using data from the end of 2007 to 2011. Methods. Expected neutrino fluxes were calculated for each burst individually. The most recent numerical calculations of the spectra using the NeuCosmA code were employed, which include Monte Carlo simulations of the full underlying photohadronic interaction pr...
متن کاملANTARES sensitivity to steady cosmic gamma ray sources
Amongst the atmospheric muons recorded by neutrino telescopes are muons produced by the interaction of cosmic gamma rays with the Earth’s atmosphere. Although they are not numerous, it has been suggested that such muons could be distinguished by neutrino telescopes from the isotropic background by correlating their direction with known sources of gamma rays. The ANTARES neutrino telescope is ta...
متن کاملOptical follow-up of high energy neutrinos detected by the ANTARES telescope
The ANTARES Collaboration has completed in 2008 the deployment of what is currently the largest high energy cosmic neutrino detector in the Northern hemisphere, covering a volume of about 0.01 km3. To enhance the sensitivity of the ANTARES detector to transient sources, such as Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs), Core Collapse Super Novae (CCSN), flaring active galactic nuclei (AGN) and microquasars, a me...
متن کاملExploring the Universe with the Antares Neutrino Telescope
The ANTARES Collaboration is currently constructing a large neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean sea. The telescope will use a three-dimensional array of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) to detect the Cherenkov light emitted in sea water by neutrino-induced muons. The array of 12 strings, which hold 900 PMTs, is planned to be deployed at a depth of about 2500 m near Toulon (France), 40 km off th...
